EC/ASECS 2008 Conference
The Eighteenth-Century Political World
East-Central American Society for
Eighteenth-Century Studies
Georgetown University, Washington D.C.
November 6-9, 2008
Given a political season in a political city, the 2008 conference takes up the theme of politics. Proposed papers and panels might explore--but are not limited to--themes of ruling and being ruled, power and subversion, dynasties, succession, and shifting power structures. The relationships among absolutism, constitutional monarchy, and other forms of representative government suggest both European and Trans-Atlantic emphases, but we welcome all varieties of the eighteenth-century political experience, including British, European, African, Native American, as well as representations of the political in what might be traditionally thought of as the non-political discourses of science, technology, and medicine. Papers exploring the political in art, music, drama, poetry, and fiction are welcome. We invite you to address the broadest range of issues relating to the literature, history, and culture of politics in the long eighteenth century.
The meeting will take place November 6-9, 2008 at the Georgetown Marriott and on the Georgetown University Campus, located in the heart of that eighteenth-century village, George Town, established on the Potomac in 1751 and named in honor of King George II. Excursions to Mt. Vernon, as well as various musical entertainments are in the planning stages. More information about the Georgetown Marriott, including reservation details, is available under
Accommodations.
