Advising

New students are assigned a temporary advisor at an orientation meeting before registration; thereafter they must choose a permanent advisor to consult about their program of studies. Please visit the Faculty page, which contains information about faculty members and their scholarly interests.

Most students register for 2 courses (6 credits) each semester during their first year, one of which should include a focus on critical theory. In their second year, after the completion of at least 12 credits, students opting to write a thesis register for thesis research in addition to their courses (see the Program Overview for degree options)*.

Currently enrolled students are encouraged to pre-register for the following semester during the pre-registration period. Students must meet with and secure the approval of their faculty advisors prior to registering for courses. Course selections will not be approved without a meeting between advisor and student. Pre-registration and registration can be done online through Student Access+. For more information, visit the Office of the University Registrar web site.

Students interested in enrolling in courses outside the English Department, at the Folger Shakespeare Library, or at universities in the Washington Consortium of Universities must secure the approval of both their advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies.

* Please note: Students taking 6 credits during their first year are not eligible for G.U. student health insurance; they become eligible during their second year, after the completion of at least 12 credits, or while they are registered for thesis resesarch.
