ENGL 722-01: Approaches to Teaching Writing
Section Description:
What should students learn in a writing class? And how can we best help them learn about writing? Scholars and teachers of writing have been debating these questions for decade. Everyone who teaches writing, whether as a subject in itself or as a core practice in a course focused on some other subject, has to decide how to do it. These questions will guide our exploration of research and theories about how people develop as writers, what they need to understand, and how to approach teaching. Through readings, reflections on your experience as a writer and a student, and some practice teaching, we’ll consider everything from what we mean by “writing” to how to design courses, class sessions, and assignments to strategies for responding to and evaluating students’ work. You’ll finish the semester by articulating your own theory of how to teach writing and designing your own course.
