ENGL 7230-01: Approaches to Teaching Literature

Professor Sherry Linkon

Section Description: Studying literature builds your knowledge of your field, but knowing about literature isn’t the same as knowing how to teach it. This course will prepare you for teaching by exploring three big questions: What do we want students to learn in literature courses? How can we design courses and assignments to help them learn? And what can we do in the classroom to engage and challenge our students? Drawing on theories of knowledge and of learning as well as ideas from experienced literary scholars and the experience you bring into the course as a student and scholar, you’ll develop your own theory and approach to teaching literature. You’ll write a teaching philosophy statement, design a course and a significant assignment, and practice creating and leading in-class activities.
