ENGL-283-01 – Intro to Fiction Writing

Instructor: Prof. M. Sullivan

Meeting Times: TTh 3:30PM – 4:45PM

Location: Maguire 104

Section Description:

This course offers an introduction to fiction writing, with a focus on the short story. We will consider fundamental elements of fiction and the relationships between narrative structure, style, and content, both in our own work and in the works of other writers. We will focus on drafting, discussing, and revising our own full-length stories, paying close attention to craft elements such as voice, setting, conflict, characterization, and point-of-view. As we do so, we’ll take up intensive study of effective fictions by a range of published writers, including those writing from LGBTQ, feminist, African Diaspora and other global perspectives. Weekly readings and writing exercises are designed to encourage students to explore the material and styles that most interest them, and to push their fiction to a new level of craft.
