ENGL 614-01: James Joyce
Section Description:
In this class we will read just one novel: James Joyce’s Ulysses. Published one hundred years ago, on February 2, 1922, the book has delighted and infuriated readers, as well as become a magnet for literary critics, from feminists to marxists, and ecocritics to disability studies scholars. We will move slowly and deliberately through the book, paying close attention to form, style, and historical contexts. At the same time, we will survey the range of critical approaches and responses to the novel over the past 50 or so years, while also asking what the next hundred years of the novel’s life will look like. All students will write a 20-25-page final critical paper on one particular episode in the novel.
