ENGL 627-01: Literature & the Global South

Section Description:

What is the Global South? How does it differ from the Third World? How does it relate to the idea of the postcolonial? How does thinking from the Global South offer new archives, methodologies, questions, and more? This class will trace literary and cultural formulations from and engagements with the discourse of the Global South. We will look at emerging and established critical questions, from environmentalism in the south to new decolonization movements, and from oceanic to planetary thinking. We will read a range of novels and theoretical writing, primarily from South Asia and the African continent, to help us to ask how thinking from and about the Global South might reorient our critical attention. Authors may include JM Coetzee, Sunjeev Suhota, Indra Sinha, Namwali Serpell, and more.
