Quotes from both students’ essays were featured in the program pamphlet:
“Václav Havel’s words “subvert the traditional rhetoric of saving the world by equating salvation not only with passionate action, but with thoughtfulness and humility… reflection and meekness are necessary for enacting social change.” ” – Caroline Lengyel
“The only thing greater than receiving the gift of human compassion in a time of crisis is to give it to someone else.” – Melina Delkic
Essay Competition Description
In honor of the 80th anniversary of the birth of President Havel, the Embassy of the Czech Republic, in collaboration with Georgetown University, invited Georgetown undergraduate students to submit an essay on The Salvation of This Human World. The theme reflects upon President Havel’s speech to the Joint Session of the US Congress in 1990, in which he stated that, “The salvation of this human world lies nowhere else than in the human heart, in the human power to reflect, in human meekness and in human responsibility.” With these words in mind, students were asked to reflect on the current migration crisis in Europe and how it should be resolved. The winner will receive a round-trip air ticket to the Czech Republic, complements of the Embassy of the Czech Republic and Czech Tourism, and five nights’ accommodation in Prague.
Congratulations, Melina and Caroline!
