Robert Patterson & African American Studies Major featured in The Hoya

Robert Patterson, Chair of the Department of African American Studies and Affiliate Associate Professor of English, was featured in an article in last week’s edition of The Hoya. It showcased the growth of the new African American Studies program and Patterson highlighted the relevance of the newly formed department for the Georgetown community at large:

“There is recognition of the importance of African American studies as an academic discipline, being on the forefront of interdisciplinary knowledge production,” Patterson said. “Thinking about the history, the cultural and economic factors that have led to racial stratification is one example, but as important to the ways that black cultural production has been critical to advancing this conversation.”

In a student-led survey, 99.5% of students supported the conversion of this previously interdisciplinary program to become its own major. It launched this fall 2016 and garnered five undergraduate majors and twenty minors, suggesting the program will only continue to grow.
